Crypto art is any form of digital art that is “tokenized” or “minted” on a blockchain network, like Ethereum. This allows an art buyer to have sole or partial ownership of an artwork. A blockchain is a publicly visible ledger that provides proof of ownership and allows its transfer. Just like physical artworks, the artist retains full copyright (intellectual property rights) of their work, while the owner stakes claim in the work, in which they can resell and profit from its sale. Through the use of “Smart Contracts” built into the blockchain, the artist may receive a percentage of its future sale. This empowers the artist to sell digital artworks in a way that was not possible before. Art collectors can support the artists they love, while potentially profiting from their collections in the future. Now that display technology is readily available, collectors can display their collections anywhere, and take it with them. This is like the difference between collecting music on vinyl versus mp3.
At the moment, Andrea Mai’s digital artworks are on auction at OpenSea marketplace. They are single editions, so if you purchase them, you become the sole owner. Artworks are priced in Ethereum (ETH). You will need a wallet, like MetaMask, to make a bid and conduct the transaction. The “token” for the artwork will be transferred and stored in your wallet. In the future, if you want to sell it, OpenSea will take a 2.5% transaction fee, and the artist will receive a 10% royalty. Make sure that if you are buying a piece from me, that you are buying it from a site that is directly linked from my site, and that it is verified, as there can be imposter accounts out there. I can take payment in USD by PayPal, but you still need an Ethereum wallet so that I can transfer the token to you. If you need help getting started, please feel free to contact us.
